Enhancing Animal Health and Welfare Education in Liberia: A Collaborative Workshop

From November 25 to 27, 2024, the Liberia Animal Welfare and Conservation Society (LAWCS), in partnership with the WTS Vets United Programme, organized a capacity-building workshop at Cuttington University, Gbarnga, Bong County. This transformative event brought together 22 lecturers from four universities: Cuttington University, Lofa County University, Nimba County University, and Liberia International Christian College (LICC).

The workshop focused on integrating animal welfare into academic curricula and equipping lecturers with practical skills. Facilitated by LAWCS CEO Morris Darbo and Dr. Etagegnehu D. Belayneh from the Ministry of Agriculture, the sessions covered topics such as the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, clinical examination techniques, disease management, wound care, and hands-on training in poultry and livestock care. Participants also explored curriculum development strategies and ways to enhance the visibility of animal welfare programs.

Feedback from participants highlighted the workshop’s impact. Cuttington and Lofa universities reaffirmed their commitment to advancing animal welfare education through newly established courses like Animal Welfare I & II. Lecturers from Nimba County University and LICC pledged to propose curriculum updates to their administrations. Additionally, Cuttington University’s Dean, Dr. George Tee Forpoh, emphasized the importance of inter-university collaboration in fostering community development through animal welfare.

This workshop marks a significant step forward in promoting animal welfare education in Liberia. LAWCS and WTS Vets United Programme remain dedicated to supporting educational institutions in creating a future where compassion for animals is central to academic and community initiatives.

Celebrated World Animal Day 2024: A Compassionate Future for All

On October 4, over 600 bright, eager students joined the Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society (LAWCS) and commemorated World Animal Day–a day that not only brought joy and excitement but also inspired a deeper connection to the world we share with animals. This year’s theme, the world is their home too,`` resonated with everyone present, reminding us of all of the vital role animals play in our lives and the environment.

The atmosphere was electric with curiosity and compassion as students learned about the five Basic Freedoms of Animals–freedoms that every animal deserves, such as freedom from hunger, discomfort, pain and fear. Each child pledged to become a protector of these freedoms, vowing to stand up for animal rights and to become a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. These pledges are not just promises for today but commitments to building a future where compassion extends to all living beings.

Beyond the education, the students were given delicious plant-based meals, a beautiful reminder of the connection between what we eat and the health of our planet. As they enjoyed these nourishing meals, they were inspired by the idea that by making small, thoughtful choices, we can all contribute to a healthier and sustainable world.

World Animal Day 2024 was not just a celebration–it was a powerful movement toward a future where kindness and respect for animals are the norm, not the exception. The event left everyone, young and old, with a profound sense of purpose. Every small act of kindness, every effort to protect animals, is a step toward a world where they are cherished as fellow inhabitants of our shared planet.

Together, with the next generation leading the way, we are creating a more compassionate future. The celebration proved that our actions today would ripple through time, nurturing a world where animals are seen, heard and valued–not as resources, but as living beings who share our home.

Let’s keep this momentum alive. Let's stand together, continue to advocate for animal welfare and with every act of compassion, remind ourselves that the world is truly their home too.

Africa Restaurant Vegan Week

From September 2 to 8, the Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society (LAWCS) participated in the #AfricanRestuarantVeganWeek, joining local stakeholders to promote veganism, raise awareness about farmed animals and highlight the benefits of plant-based nutrition. Through this initiative, LAWCS served plant-based meals to schoolchildren and community members, educating them on the importance of compassionate food choices and the health and environmental benefits of a vegan diet. The effort aligns with LAWCS` mission to foster empathy toward animals and advocate for sustainable lifestyles in Liberia.

LAWCS is also collaborating with restaurants in Monrovia to introduce vegan and vegetarian options on their menus, encouraging a shift toward plant-based food consumption in Liberia. By raising awareness about the suffering of farmed animals and advocating for ethical food choices. LAWCS aims to reduce the demand for animal products and promote more sustainable food systems. This ongoing commitment to plant-based living seeks to improve both animal welfare and environmental sustainability, inviting more people to join the movement for a compassionate and healthier future.

LAWCS Celebrates International Dog Day

On Monday, August 26, LAWCS joined global efforts to honor the invaluable contributions that dogs make to families and communities. LAWCS celebration not only highlights the loyalty and companionship dogs provide but also serves as a critical platform to address the pressing issues of animal welfare in Liberia including neglect, abandonment, inadequate feeding, lack of veterinary care, and the consumption of dog meat.

The celebration was featured on three radio stations and various newspapers. LAWCS team visited various families and showcased heartwarming stories through interviews by journalists with those who provide exceptional care for their dogs.

The Transformative Impact of Humane Education at LAWCS

There are always remarkable impacts of Humane Education program on the lives of both animals and children at LAWCS.

A heartwarming example of this impact is the bond between Morris and his adorable dog, PEACE. Their relationship has grown so strong that Morris considers PEACE his best friend. They are inseparable, spending time together doing various activities, including watching movies. It is evident that PEACE enjoys these moments just as much as Morris does.

At LAWCS, we always emphasize the importance of humane education as an integral part of every child`s upbringing. The story of Morris and PEACE serves as a powerful inspiration to other children. They see firsthand the joy and companionship that can come from a deep bond with an animal. This encourages them to treat animals with kindness and respect, fostering empathy and compassion.

Our humane education program aims to instill these values in every child, ensuring that they grow up understanding the importance of treating all living beings with care and love. By witnessing examples like Morris and PEACE, children are motivated to build similar relationships, leading to a more compassionate society.

LAWCS` Animal Kindness Clubs: Inspiring Compassion and Care for Animals

At the heart of the Liberia Animal Welfare and Conservation Society (LAWCS) are our Animal Kindness Clubs, where young hearts and minds come together to make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and their communities. These clubs are not just about helping animals; they are about fostering a culture of kindness, empathy, and responsibility among the youth.

Activities of the Animal Kindness Clubs

  1. Dog Washing:

One of the most beloved activities in our clubs is dog washing. You can see the excitement and joy in the faces of the children as they gently clean and care for the dogs. This activity teaches them the importance of hygiene and care in a fun and engaging way. The laughter and smiles shared during these sessions are heartwarming, as both the children and the dogs revel in the experience. It’s a beautiful sight to see the bond forming between the children and the animals, creating lasting memories and instilling a sense of responsibility.

2. Pet Feeding:

Our clubs are also dedicated to feeding pets, particularly those that are starving and in desperate need of nourishment. The children actively participate in preparing meals, and ensuring that the animals are well-fed. This activity is not only crucial for the survival of many animals but also teaches the children about compassion, generosity, and the impact of their actions. The gratitude in the eyes of the animals and the fulfillment on the faces of the children are testaments to the profound connections being made.

3. Education:

Education is a cornerstone of our Animal Kindness Clubs. We believe that change starts with awareness and knowledge. Our educational programs focus on teaching children about love, respect, and compassion for animals. Through interactive sessions, storytelling, and creative activities, the children learn about animal welfare, the importance of humane treatment, and how they can contribute to a more compassionate world. These lessons go beyond the classroom, influencing how the children interact with animals and their peers.

The Impact of Our Clubs

The impact of our Animal Kindness Clubs extends far beyond the immediate activities. By engaging in these hands-on experiences, the children develop a deeper understanding of the value of life and the importance of treating all creatures with kindness. They become ambassadors of compassion, spreading awareness and inspiring others in their communities to join the cause.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the children are contagious, encouraging more and more young people to get involved. Their efforts are creating ripples of positive change, leading to a more humane and empathetic society. Through their actions, they are not only improving the lives of animals but also shaping a future where kindness and respect for all living beings are the norm.

We invite you to join us in supporting the LAWCS Animal Kindness Clubs. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, your involvement can make a significant difference. Together, we can nurture a generation of compassionate leaders who will continue to advocate for animal welfare and create a better world for all.

World Donkey Day Celebration

May 8 is celebrated around the world as World Donkey Day. LAWCS celebrated the day by educating donkey owners and school children about the plight of working donkeys, their contributions to families and the negative effects of climate change on donkeys and the communities. LAWCS also used the day to feed over 150 donkeys and treat them from various health issues including wound care, deworming, etc.

Climate change has led to altered rainfall patterns and increased temperatures, resulting in periods of drought and reduced water availability for many donkeys, and cattle in communities where LAWCS works in Guinea. The animals are now suffering from heat stress, food insecurity including fresh water and healthcare issues. LAWCS continues to respond to the needs of working animals in Guinea by educating the population and providing free veterinary care along with foods and fresh water for animals in need.

Eating More Plant-Based Foods for Healthy Lifestyle, Animal Protection and Environmental Stewardship!!

Promoting animal protection through education and providing plant-based foods for school kids is a holistic approach to instilling values of compassion, kindness, sustainability, and health. By integrating animal welfare education into school curriculums, students can learn about the ethical considerations surrounding animal treatment and the environmental impact of animal agriculture. Additionally, offering plant-based food options in schools not only supports these values but also encourages healthier eating habits and reduces the demand for animal products, thereby contributing to the welfare of animals. This is a dual strategy that educates children about the importance of treating animals with kindness while providing practical choices that align with these values. Every week, LAWCS serves over 300 school children with delicious plant-based foods.

Restoring Hope

This cute dog got caught and spent 3 days on a snare. The left hand got damaged and the owner was only applying herbs that finally damaged the hand. The owner lost hope. However, the owner’s son, John heard about LAWCS from his friend and he ran to our office to help their family dog from dying. Our Animal Healthcare Officer immediately went to the village to save the dog. The hand was amputated and after intensive care, the dog has recovered and looks so happy.

Improving the Health and Welfare of Animals

In a poor country like Liberia where life is very cheap, access to animal healthcare is impossible. LAWCS outreach community engagement program organizes an entire community to discuss the health and welfare of their animals follows by free veterinary services such as de-worming, mange treatment, wound care, flea/tick prevention and treatment and free nutritional diets for dogs and cats. Each community outreach engagement and animal healthcare program cost us $100 USD. Promoting the health and welfare of community animals also leads to healthy communities.
