LAWCS` Animal Kindness Star

Congratulations to one of our Animal Kindness Stars, Fatumata Fallah for winning SPANA CASE STUDIES COMPETITION. Fatumata has been involved in LAWCS’ education programme for over two years. Before receiving humane education lessons, Fatumata did not like animals at all as she was very afraid of them. She often witnessed people around her being cruel to animals and thought that this behaviour was normal and acceptable. However, her opinion has completely changed as a result of LAWCS’ education programme. In her own words, Fatumata said: “I feel so connected to animals since I joined the education programme, and I am always talking to my friends and family members about animal welfare”. She is now a self-professed animal lover and takes any opportunity to share what she has learnt with her peers. Fatumata even rescued her own dog, Justice, from her uncle. To this day, she continues to ensure Justice is well cared for and looked after. She likes to “feed, bath and play” with Justice to keep him happy and healthy.

Celebrating Animals and Recognizing Their Plight

At LAWCS, we consider every day as animal day. However, on October 4, LAWCS organized a massive parade along with street performances in celebration of animals and highlighting their plight to the society. The celebration brought together over 1000 people and various messages on animal welfare were disseminated.

LAWCS Celebrates World Rabies Day (Facts; Not Fear)

LAWCS is an active player in rabies elimination initiatives and a two-time receiver of Global Alliance for Rabies Control Award (2016 and 2020). On September 28, 2021, LAWCS joined other organizations around the world in the celebration of World Rabies Day by vaccinating over 500 dogs and cats along with massive rabies awareness in 20 communities with over 2,000 people.

International Cat Day (August 8)

Cats are precious and friendly animals. They are smart and intelligent. Unfortunately, we live in a country where cats are considered as witches and treated with extreme cruelty in some quarters. At LAWCS, we consider every day as Cat’s Day and we are doing everything humanly possible to promote more love, care, kindness, empathy and compassion for cats. We are helping many kids and their families to see the love and beauty in cats.

Building the capacity of students in Animal Welfare

Liberia doesn’t have a veterinary school. Together with our partner, WTS/WTG Vets United Programme, we are empowering animal science students and instructors of Lofa County Community College and Cuttington University in animal welfare and health programme through theoretical and regular hand on field practice. The programme builds the capacity of the students in animal welfare and basic veterinary skills and knowledge. 25 university students have graduated from the programme and over 80 students from the two institutions of higher learning are still undergoing the programme.

Welttierschutzstiftung (WTS) is a charitable foundation, established in 2015 by Welttierschutzgesellschaft e.V. The foundation promotes animal welfare worldwide. Humane Education Is The Way Forward To Ending Animal Cruelty

This is why we emphasize the importance of humane education as an integral part of every child development. Humane Education helps in instilling in the younger generation the values of kindness, respect, love, empathy, responsibility and compassion for animals and other people. This is Fatumata and her pet baby “JUSTICE”. Fatumata is a member of our Animal Kindness Club in her school. She and JUSTICE have been able to inspire her entire family and community members that animals are just like us, they feel pain, suffer, and need love and care.

For the past years, LAWCS has been working toward the elimination of rabies and improving the health and welfare of dogs and cats in rural Liberia. LAWCS conducts regular village to village general veterinary care program which includes rabies and pavovirus vaccinations, deworming, tick and flea medications, wound dressing, mange treatment, etc. This program helps to improve the welfare and health of the pets and the community people who live and interact with them daily.

Celebration of International Dog Day

On August 26, 2020, LAWCS joined other organizations around the world to celebrate dogs and their contributions to humanity. Dogs have been our friends and trusty helpers for thousands of years. They have shared our burdens, brought us joy, protected us from dangers, guarded our properties, rescued other animals and people from dangers, put food on the tables for many people in poor countries, and showed us the true meaning of friendship. Dogs show us unconditional love. They do not care what we look like, whether we are rich or poor, whether we are educated or uneducated; our dogs greet us and serve us with unconditional love. These lovely animals do all of these very important things for us, but many people in our society pay them back with cruelty. Some people keep dogs without caring for them, without providing them the proper food and protection. Many people also eat them. LAWCS continues to stand up and speak for these lovely animals.

Finding Hope in Pet during COVID-19

At LAWCS, We emphasize the importance of Humane Education for the younger generation because the impacts are real and physical. Krubo is one of our Animal Kindness Stars in her school. Schools are now closed due to COVID-19 outbreak in the country. Krubo is now spending the STAY HOME preventive measure with her family in their little village. Krubo took her little cute puppy, BUSH to the river to bath her. Both Krubo and Bush love one another. The power of Humane Education can change the entire world. The children are now finding happiness with their pets during this period of global pandemic.
